So you call up your mom because obviously shes sympathetic, or your dad if hes the more sympathetic one, and you talk about the injustice of the universe, about how youre kicking everyones ass in practice, even though thats absolutely not true, because youre looking at the data every single day after practice on the bulletin board and youre ranked in the bottom 5% of the team, and all this sort of stuff is telling you youre not working that hard. In a typical narrative its laced with protections about why they havent achieved their potential. I am the person that can help them do better with the data. All of this has been done through the cauldron. But right now for us its hit or miss. If a woman is incredibly confident, I am never going to touch that. And all of a sudden I saw this transformation that was phenomenal. So thats our first core value. And I loved it. And heres what Im learning from it. Let me tell you something Mr.Welch, Im sorry, but I took a guy that was a substandard salesman for me. So whats critical for you, and actually the hiring process is everything for you, and so this is where, again, this is something that Jack Welch used to say, and I loved it. And she was telling a great story, and she said when she was at Columbia they just hired a Russian exile poet by the name of Joseph Brodsky. Just for refreshment, you know. We need them to embrace and live what we have collected below because our culture and core values are only as strong as our leaders and what they endorse and drive as acceptable behavior. And in changing that and sending then in the right direction all of a sudden a substandard player goes to a different level because now shes finally accountable for performance, whereas earlier she had a narrative that protected her from being responsible and accountable, and now all of a sudden we expose that, and now shes selected to be more accountable and her game goes to a completely different level. But heres the coolest thing about evaluating people with numbers. You actually are. Anson: Well, to transfer you let them know thatand usually a person that wants, the person thats really below the line is someone that isnt playing much, usually, and so as a result, you know, behind your back theyre whining about everything under the sun, which, by the way, goes completely counter to our first core value, which is we dont whine. Anson has 40 years in his coaching career and hes lost less than 70 games. So I think, yeah, business can save the world. Reaching the National Championship 24 times, his winning percentage against the best teams in the country is well over 90%. And one of the things Ive seen recently is that we, in fact we did a study on this and found that 47% of corporate America does not know their organizations core values, which, if you think about it, on one hand is extremely surprising. You see, in this first slide, the parents are screaming at the kid. But it doesnt mean like we stumbled upon all the great things immediately. Right now were in the heart of the womens World Cup, and this inspired me to learn from elite athletes and coaches to unpack their tips and tricks for building winning cultures. And so if they claim they have a 4.5 in the beat, which is professional level in terms of cardiovascular fitness, and yet their beat score was a 30, and the qualifying line to get on the field is 40, I will debate it with them. Ill give you my favorite example. And obviously our history is so good at projecting this they have to make a change if they want to get there. And the thing, whats interesting about reading all these books is what theyre all telling us is youve got to have a set of core values and youve got to live by them. And my job is to get them to the truth because where do I want them to go? And of course hes nodding and hes not contradicting anyone. I want them to basically be wonderful leaders, and the principles of our core values, or what we try to drive everyone in the program to live. Do you like to talk with a lot of other coaches? So those five, Ive done those for a while in the last five, I assume were doing these sprints until the end of reported time. And he said, well, if thats the case none of you guys will get your PhDs and masters degrees. All these kids that were substandard, I would kill myself to try to get them there, burning just so much energy on these people that didnt end up helping me much anyway, but I did transform them to a small degree. Do you have a method that you use or are you a big reader? And Im thinking great, well have all these core values. So whats criticizing them? Shes telling me the story in the New York Times, and I am captivated by it. Mark Cohen, an award winning UNC assistant professional of English and comparative literature, when asked who was the best teacher you ever had and why, said this, The best teacher Ive ever had is failure. And now its the free throw line and back, mid stripe and back, other free throw line and back, end of the court and back. Anson: But basically I try to get them out of my system. Because hopefully they will find someone eventually that theyre going to enjoy working for, and a culture they willfully support, and youre actually doing them a favor. Anson: Its to save your bottom line. The girls you get to coach, and across college athletics, all the players that come through programs are going to move on at some point and join a workforce and work their way through and hopefully become leaders. And so I wish there were ways for me to sort out their character before I brought them in because that would have a huge impact on the kids we would end up offering scholarship money to. So heres my dream, and Ive stolen this entirely from Arthur Blank, so I want to credit him before I start bloviating about it.
